This album of Ingrid Schmoliner is a suite of powerful prepared piano music, inspired by the saga of the Percht, a female pagan godess, which appears on midwinter and whose origins reach back to the Stone Age, still present in the very remote mountain areas of the Austrian alps.
This composition speaks a unique sonic language, distinctively and complex, a multilayered piece of art without any electronic treatments or overdubs.

Starting with Stampa, a tribal trance beat helter-skelter, this music hits the listener with full impact. The following Grul with its bell-like sound preparations and fast movement creates a feeling of frozen and uneasy suspense and leads direktly to the last piece on Side A: Balaena mysticetus, which is the scientific name of the bowhead whale. And it is quite what this piece sounds like. Natural reverberation of stroked and bowed objects inside the resonance body of the Grand Piano recall the presence of an archaic living creature, fragile but of enormous size, calling through the sea.
Side B bursts in with another repetitive structure, a stumbling dance, named after the russian counterpart of the austrian Percht, the Baba Jaga. Not in an Mussorgskyan illustrative way, but caught in a hallucinating fever trip on a spiraling roller coaster. A punching, heavy sound without preparations, nor pitty is opening a clear view on the hitting shock that is imminent.
The following track Teadin brings silence and relief. On the record’s longest track, the piano strings are resonating from sustaining Ebow impulses, layered to beautiful harmonies. With Zampamuatta, a reprise/variation of Stampa, the LP ends and the circle is closed.
A unique sonic language, distinctively and complex, a multilayered piece of art without any electronic treatments or overdubs. With artwork by Wendelin Büchler, inspired by drawings, scratched in the alpine rocks and custumes of the Percht rites in winter.

An impressive suite of six pieces for prepared piano, inspired by the legend of Percht, a pagan goddess of the Alpine regions. Four of the six tracks involve propulsive rhythmic work while two are more serene. The preparations she uses seem to be not uncommon– a couple of the pieces remind me of Cages „Dances for Piano“, but with more driving force, less gamelan (though that tonality is heard on „grul“) and one track, „Бaбa-Яra“, is remarkably reminiscent of the main spine from Rzewski’s „Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues“–but Schmoliner has a fine sense of restricted color. I often found myself thinking of strong charcoal drawings with just hints of umber or ocher, something in the Kiefer range. She tends to set a pace, sometimes verging on the relentless (but not overly crowded) then seeds it with these delicate offshoots, dabs of sound that are gone before you know it like enticing images glimpsed from a hurtling train. On „Balaena mysticetus“, presumably an homage to whale song, she bows the strings with great sensitivity, summoning wonderful waving moans while on „Teadin“, she makes effective use of e-bow. Otherwise, it’s full steam ahead, no looking back.

A solid, imaginative and finely performed recording–I’m eager to hear more from Schmoliner.

As she focuses on what happens inside the viscera of the prepared piano, the nearly scary centering of Ingrid Schmoliner’s eyes suggests that messing up with her is not recommended. Still, a sort of uncompromising poetry and a somewhat ruffled sonorousness get integrated in proportionate structures across the six tracks of this album, whose cyrillic translation reads as „Dwarf Suite“ according to the computerized gnomes at Google. The Austrian pianist’s approach reveals total connectedness among the various stages of her individual artistic wholeness. Exactitude in the music’s mechanical consolidation, and the type of sensitivity that separates insightful legitimacy from accidental dabbling are manifest since the very first seconds. The clever choice of applying a condition to each episode – exploiting that option completely – repays the listener in full: no mistaken identities, no wishy-washy multi-genre winks or pat-on-the-back allusions. The opener and the closer – respectively titled „Stampa“ and „Zampamuatta“ – are potently rolling mechanism of percussive efficiency, colored just enough to let us recall what the original source is. „Grul“ is a delicious mini-gamelan with carillon-like shades, whereas „Balaena Mysticetus“ is perhaps the album’s top, a genuinely affecting rendering of whale singing in which Schmoliner extracts sonorities nearer to double bass and cello than you might envisage. „Бaбa-Яra“ is a ceaseless finger race on the left area of the keyboard, while „Teadin“ distils sliding subtleties and flimsy upper partials via an eBow. After this introductory meeting with an improviser conjuring up scents of Baba Yaga with such a grade of prowess, I’m truly willing to be a witness in eventual forthcoming sorceries.
Or, if you want me to be really serious: Ingrid is the goods – go listen.

„Prepared“ piano is perhaps putting it lightly. There are moments where the piano sounds like a pile of splintered wood, ivory shards and loose strings diving in and out of the mess; strings buzz and try to wriggle out of a sandwich of glazed maple, while accidental languages of overtone start to emerge from Schmoliner’s boisterous rewiring of the piano interior. But the piano is still there, if only in part. Rich, clunking low notes trace momentary lines back to the instrument of origin, as particular notes manage to emerge unscathed from Schmoliner’s preparations – little pockets of intact mechanism in amongst the rubble of broken texture.
One can imagine her encircling the instrument like a pathologist at an autopsy. At some angles, it’s a clattering drum kit that sounds like a clock shop during an earthquake; at others, it’s a gigantic violin whimpering into a lonely, empty room (which disturbingly resembles an animal wheezing on the edge of death). Perhaps there’s a stool by the keys to denote where the player should position themselves, but perhaps not. The piano becomes a device for which there is no correct orientation nor mode of interaction, and Schmoliner alternates between the roles of liberal percussionist a botched, junkyard adaption of the traditional concert pianist, attempting to play her instrument „properly“ in spite of the fact that the instrument has ceased to be „proper“ itself.

Ihre diversen Projekte (u. a.

– Grandissimo.
Il disco è in vendita soltanto come vinile in edizione limitata a 300 copie numerate.

Sands-Zine

Balaena mysticetus.

Dronová ponorná seance Balaena mysticetus vás zavede až do nirvánového vytržení a následující Baba Yaga chrlí své děsuplné klávesové prokletí ze všech stran přes údolí, stráně, propasti i velehory celou Euroasií. Více než dvanáctiminutové zastaveníčko Teadin vás zavede do říše e-boweového nervydrásajícího i nervyutišujícího pointilistického hyperminimalismu. Jistou katarzi pak přináší závěrečná temně kovově zvonivá vířivá psychedelicky laděná paramantra Zampamuatta. Totální prolnutí postupů nové hudby, svobodné improvizace a šamanských rituálů non plus ultra. Skvostné ovládnutí piana ve všech jeho částech a zákrutech, povětšinou bez použití elektronických devices (kromě zmiňovaného e-bow v jediné skladbě) působící zcela transcendentálně. Akustické střídmé a noblesní podprahové do jisté míry vzrušivě frigidiózní bakchanálie. Je to šestidílná svita, která má svůj řád, pevné kořeny a přesto naprostou vzdušnost. Vrásovitá kontraelegie plná výbušných i melancholických momentů a nevyzývavé krásy.

Petr Slabý, His Voice

A jól hangzó szakmai életrajzi adatok helyett essen inkább szó a карлицы сюита című lemezen hallhatóakról. A карлицы сюита hat tétele is egy aprólékos, sziszifuszi munka eredménye, egy mesteri ötletességgel megkreált hanguniverzum. Lomhán kavargó búgások-zúgások, szöges ellentéte mindannak, amit eddig a карлицы сюита korábbi tételeiben hallottunk. A korong második felében egymást váltják az erősen repetitív struktúrák (Бaбa-Яra), a megváltó csöndben elnyúló, hosszan kitartott hangok légies kötegei (Teadin), majd ismét egy heves, perkusszív kalimpálás (Zampamuatta), ami nem más, mint a lemezt nyitó Stampa visszatérő variációja. A kör bezárult, a lemez lejárt. Kiváló, mi több, egyedülálló album; kétségkívül a fent említett zongorista hölgyek munkái mellé kívánkozik.

I’m trying to get my head around this LP of prepared piano by Ingrid Schmoliner this morning. My feeble western keyboard can’t even type its title, but it’s an instrumental concept record inspired by the saga of female pagan goddess Percht. In doing so Schmoliner draws a mysterious and unfamiliar sonic language from the piano, ranging from cyclical hammered rhythms to eerie whale-like bowed drones. The opening two pieces ‚Stampa‘ and ‚Grul‘ rely strongly on rhythmic repetition but in very different ways, the opener a chugging multilayered landscape of woody looped percussion and repetitive bell-like clangs while the latter piece instead opts of an eerily tense soundscape of windchime-like melodic patterns and booming drawn out piano notes, the side closing in very different fashion with stroked and bowed objects inside the piano creating a series of hauntingly resonating drones. Over on the other side we have a more conventional piano piece full of repetition and intuitively hammering bassy discord, before the most tranquil of the album’s pieces ‚Teadin‘, a glacial mixture of pure-toned droning and metallic buzzing created by pressing an ebow directly against the piano’s strings, before a piece similar to the opener rounds off the cycle.
Fascinating and unusual piano-based soundmaking.
